In the Potter’s Hand

Published on: January 21, 2025

Jeremiah 18:4

“And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.”

We try to harmonize human sovereignty with divine sovereignty. This is a problem old as mankind. Jeremiah was facing this dilemma. So God sent him to visit the potter. As he watched the potter shaping a vessel from common clay, the answer came to him. The only limitation for the potter, was the condition of the clay. If the clay cooperates and submits, the potter can make lovely and useful vessels. If not , the potter must mar it or recondition it until it submits. He doesn’t throw it away; he simply reworks it until the clay is right for shaping to its rightful form. Human sovereignty submits to divine sovereignty.
